WHEN people think of hypnotherapy they may likely conjure up images of people being forced to bark like a dog or cluck like a chicken.

However, hypnosis can be used alongside traditional therapy to alleviate addictions and anxieties.

“During hypnosis we use a mix of metaphors, stories and positive suggestions,” he said.

“People often ask if they will lose consciousness under hypnosis and whether we can take control of them.

“We are very careful not to drop people down into a place where they fall asleep or lose consciousness as this disengages them from the process. We are looking to put you in that place between sleep and awake where your mind is hyper alert and focused on one thing.”

He said the treatment had the power to settle emotions, fill in missing information, break down dysfunctional beliefs and address self-esteem.

“We can amplify and empower people to do what they want to do, but we cannot make people do what they do not want to do,” he said.

“The fact is that people who voluntarily get up on stage at a hypnotist show are eager to do whatever is asked of them.”

He said there was a world of difference between therapy and what happens at a stage show.

He said he found the hypnosis often helped people who hadn’t found success with traditional therapy, and was a power that shouldn’t always be mocked.
