In a stage act called Hypnodog, Simon Cowell was “hypnotised” by a dog when it locked gaze with him. Dr. John Butler, who saw an earlier Hypnodog act years ago, explains – this is an excellent example of the power of suggestion combined with an element of waking hypnosis. Simon Cowell heard the hypnotist saying that the dog would hypnotise him, and then he carried out the suggestion he’d heard, at the cue of locking gaze with the dog. Almost anything can be used as a cue for suggestion, but this one is particularly funny when you see it in action. When this happens without a formal trance, and the person accepts the suggestion in place of their own judgment, we call it waking hypnosis.
